- Some Technical Considerations of a Dirty Joke**The materials that appear here were originally delivered as four consecutive lectures to an undergraduate social science class at the University of California at Irvine during November of 1971. They have been edited by Gail Jefferson into a condensed and continuous presentation and are published here posthumously. Harvey Sacks routinely taped his lectures and had them transcribed. Initially this was a way to organize his materials, but it subsequently developed into an informal publication system distributing his lectures and other unpublished manuscripts free of charge to anyone who asked for them. A large collection of his transcribed lectures and other manuscripts are available and will be published shortly (Sacks: forthcoming) [J. S.].
