The clinical consensus that emerged from a July 1982 conference held in California and entitled "Unborn: Management of the Fetus with a Correctable Congenital Defect" is described. The conference was attended by professionals from thirteen centers in five countries active in fetal treatment. Current experimental and clinical experiences were reviewed, problems identified, and potential benefits and liabilities assessed. Participants agreed to cooperative exchange of information, establishment of a registry of treated cases, and formulation of tentative guidelines for use in what is a promising but still experimental field.
