Technology and Organizational Structure: A Reexamination of the Findings of the Aston Group

Investigators of organizational behavior disagree about the importance of technology in a theory of organizational structure. The Aston group asserts that its research shows technology to be much less important than other variables, such as size. Their findings are reanalyzed, using path analysis to investigate the implications of their conclusions. A plausible theory which treats technology as an independent variable is then developed. Finally, a fairly complex model of organizational structure is reconstructed from the Aston group's data. Both these efforts reaffirm the value of treating technology as an independent variable and of using theory-oriented path analysis.
