Behavioural Travel Modelling
The purpose of this chapter in a state-of-the-art book is to highlight the advances in theory, method and application that have been made since the previous comprehensive overview which outlined developments up to mid-1975(124). The usefulness has to be assessed in terms of existing modelling approaches, the issues confronting planning agencies and the relative costs per predictive accuracy and contribution to the evaluation process. The issue of valuation of journey attributes is treated in greater depth by Hensher and Dalvi, to which the reader is referred for further information on this topic. The need for such development is being recognised, as is shown by some of the applications, referenced in the previous section of this chapter, where efforts have been made to develop models to test pollution control strategies, car-pooling programmes, and fuel restrictions on various aspects of trip-making.
